This song is about a girl we used to be friends, but is no longer between us.
It's title is inspired by a poem of Olavo Bilac,a great brazilian parnasian poet, by the same title, which, for instance, is a reference to the first words of Dante's "Divine Comedy".
The poem:
Cheguei. Chegaste. Vinhas fatigada
E triste, e triste e fatigado eu vinha.
Tinhas a alma de sonhos povoada,
E a alma de sonhos povoada eu tinha...
E paramos de súbito na estrada
Da vida: longos anos, presa à minha
A tua mão, a vista deslumbrada
Tive da luz que teu olhar continha.
Hoje, segues de novo... Na partida
Nem o pranto os teus olhos umedece,
Nem te comove a dor da despedida.
E eu, solitário, volto a face, e tremo,
Vendo o teu vulto que desaparece
Na extrema curva do caminho extremo.
(Poesias, Sarças de fogo, 1888.)
lyrics
Her hair smells like the springtime
Over places I've never knew
And her eyes are like twin suns
Over Saharan dunes
Even despising reality
For not believing
I still love you
More than anything, anything
Je t'aime tant,
Je t'aime plus que tout
Many times we lay our heads in our beds
For many hours we keep trying to forget
How we’ve done wrong with our hearts
You can’t forget I loved you from the start
My life needed to run,
And you needed to stay
I don’t blame you,
But I can’t forget you
And in the far turn that splits the far way
We said goodbye and turned away
When the show starts,
I sing a pray for my soul
Just when I die to stay with you,
I can’t let you go
Oh, all the songs I sing
Oh, all the prizes I win
Are for you
